The title “blonde bombshell” began in early Hollywood and included stars like Jayne Mansfield, Mae West, and Brigitte Bardot.
Jayne Mansfield, labeled the “Cleavage Queen,” was a stage and film star and later became one of the early Playboy Playmates. It is said that her measurements (41” bust and 22” waist) inspired new designs for brassieres.
Mae West, the actress who famously said “cultivate your curves – they may be dangerous but they won’t be avoided,” is an actress known for her skill, her use of double entendre and her sex appeal. In 1935 Mae West was the second highest paid person in the US and she battled with censorship boards throughout much of her career. A groundbreaking entertainer, having a 36” bust, 26” waist, and 36” hips were only one of her many assets.
Brigitte Bardot, French film star, inspired an entire generation of movie goers. With a bust of 35.5” which bulged above her 19” waist, Brigitte made the bikini popular and she even has a neckline named after her. More interesting, she inspired the name of a Czechoslovakian locomotive. With its front resembling female breasts, it is called the Bardotka.
