I really am a bit snobbish about celebrity obsession. I mean – why do I care if Britney is “back” for the 6th time this decade? Who cares if Jennifer Aniston got a tattoo? Can’t Justin Beiber and Selena Gomez just get drunk and make out for the paparazzi already? Why must I be bombarded by all of this trash all the time? Although I have been known to follow fashion at Cannes, that doesn’t mean that I think Charlie Sheen is headline news.
But the fact of the matter is that TMZ, US Weekly, and celebrity Tweets are everywhere and it is hard to avoid it even if you know it’s just plain awful!
Here are three artists who have elevated celebrity trash into something at least a bit refined:
Bruno Mouron and Pascal Rostain are two ex-photographers who have collected celebrity trash for over 20 years. Seeing their exhibit at the Maison Europeenne de la Photographie in Paris in 2007 was amazing. They literally collected trash outside of celebrity homes like stalkers (slightly unnerving), and then documented it like the scene of a FBI investigation. (What is the French FBI?) It was intriguing to see that – despite all her svelte-ness – Madonna drinks sodas. Hallelujah! (click here for information about the exhibit). See more of her trash below:
And since I just got back from Vegas and Sharon Stone in “Casino” is on my mind, here’s her trash:
While BM and PR seem to use celebrity trash as an expose into the banality that their lives share with ours, Jason Mercier goes kitsch with it. He takes trash and makes it into celebrities. Very Hollywood, right? Check out a few examples below:
I swear, this is the cleanest trash I have ever seen!
